There are two other candidates standing in Park Ward describing themselves as “Independents”: David Harper (who lives in Ashtead) and Raj Patel (who does not). They are not members of the Ashtead Independent group, which has represented Ashtead on Mole Valley District Council with the support of the Ashtead Residents Association for many years. David Harper was elected as an Ashtead Independent Councillor in 2016 and 2021, but could not remain in the Ashtead Independent group after it emerged in August 2022 that he had contravened the Ashtead Independents rules (see here). Under those rules membership of the Independent Group is open only to persons who are not members of any national political party.
